But do you know the history of the national observance? There's a great article with the detailed history over on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs webpage but here are some highlights.
- On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 fighting between the Allied nations and Germany stopped. A year later President Wilson proclaimed November 11 to be Armistice Day.
- The day became a legal holiday in 1938.
- It was in 1954 that the name was changed to Veterans Day so as to include all veterans not just those who served in WWI.
- For awhile it was decided to make a Veterans Day among a few other holidays always fall on a Monday to allow for 3 day weekends. This caused confusion in 1971, the first year it was tried. In 1975 President Ford returned the observance to its original date, November 11th starting in 1978.
Thanks to Frank Cohen for sharing the article.
And more importantly thank you to all those who have served and continue to serve as members of our armed services.
